Attending the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) Dinner provided valuable insights into the organization and the opportunities it offers for individuals looking to forge a career in the construction sector. The event highlighted how CLAC functions as one of the three unions associated with contractors hiring upon approval of Mine Life Extension (MLE) work. Given CNA's role as an agreement holder, CLAC also emphasized its commitment to employment and training opportunities for its members.
Understanding CLAC
One of the first points made during the presentation was that the term “Christian” in CLAC’s name does not imply that one must adhere to Christianity to join. The organization promotes values rooted in cooperation and mutual respect, promoting an inclusive environment that allows individuals from various backgrounds to thrive in the workplace.
Support and Training Opportunities
A highlight of the night was the testimony from Denise Shackelly, a CNA member from Nooaitch Band. Denise is also a journey person Electrician at HVC. She shared her journey in the mining industry. She recounted the challenges she faced and the training and funding she had to secure herself, prior to joining a Union. Her message was clear: for those considering a career change or entering the workforce directly from high school, seeking support from CLAC could be a game changing decision.
Those attending the presentation learned that CLAC offers substantial assistance in finding work and securing training. The organization’s commitment to investing in its members was evident, with a focus on reimbursement for training costs frequently mentioned throughout the presentation.
While the connection between CNA and CLAC is not fully established at this time, there is optimism that CLAC will emerge as a vital partner in supporting community training and certification needs with the foreseeable future of the MLE Projects approval.
The CLAC evening served as an informative platform, shedding light on the union’s dedication to it’s members and the support it offers. For those navigating the construction industry, CLAC stands as a promising resource filled with opportunities for employment and training.
