Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly and Kanaka Bar Strengthen Partnership Through New Memorandum of Understanding

Merritt, BC – February 18th, 2026 – The Citxw Nlaka’pamux Assembly (CNA) and Kanaka Bar Indian Band have formalized a renewed commitment to collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement maintains all existing arrangements, does not alter membership status, and does not shift any authority between the two parties. Instead, it outlines a shared approach to cooperation rooted in Nation-building and collective priorities.

The MOU affirms a joint dedication to advancing and revitalizing nłeʔképmx culture, identity, and teachings. Both CNA and Kanaka Bar Indian Band underscore their mutual respect for sovereignty and their commitment to programs and initiatives that foster community wellness, cultural strength, and sustainable growth. The agreement centres on uplifting the nłeʔképmx Nation through collaboration grounded in traditional knowledge, capacity-building, and the resilience of our nk̓séytkn (relatives).
This partnership is made possible through Kanaka Bar Indian Band’s own resources and strategic pillars, ensuring that progress supports both partners while honouring CNA’s established obligations and ongoing initiatives.

Key focus areas in the MOU include cultural revitalization, strengthening community capacity, digitization and protection of traditional knowledge, and creating meaningful opportunities for youth and Elders to share and carry forward teachings. The agreement also includes exploring shared services, land stewardship initiatives, and learning from each community’s successful models and approaches.

A Joint Steering Committee will be formed to guide this work, set collective priorities, and assess progress on an ongoing basis centred in nłeʔképmx values of respect, reciprocity, and accountability. Members will be kept informed of developments through CNA’s regular communications channels.
The MOU is effective for a three year term, with yearly reviews to ensure it continues to reflect the needs and goals of both CNA and Kanaka Bar Indian Band. This agreement represents a meaningful step toward deepening relationships and building opportunities that benefit all members of the Nlaka’pamux Nation.
