Merritt, B.C. — November 13, 2025 — On the traditional, unceded, and ancestral lands of the Nlaka’pamux people, leaders and support staff from 11 Nlaka’pamux Bands gathered in unity to reflect on their shared history, celebrate their living culture, and strengthen their collective commitment to the well-being of the Nlaka’pamux Nation.

Nearly 100 participants came together marking one of the largest gatherings of its kind in many years. This historic meeting brought communities together in a traditional way, grounded in ceremony, including the sharing of songs, Bear dancers, Berry dancers, storytelling, and a shared vision for future prosperity. The spirit of connection and renewal was felt throughout the day.

Co-chaired by Chief Jordan Spinks of Kanaka Bar Indian Band and Chief Christine Walkem of Cook’s Ferry Indian Band, the gathering focused on several central themes:

  • Guidance of Elders and pathways to future unity
  • Revitalization of culture and language
  • Honouring history while understanding the divisions that have shaped the Nation

Throughout the discussions, leaders reaffirmed a shared belief: that all work carried out on behalf of the Nlaka’pamux people must be rooted in transparency, honesty, and accountability, with community members at the heart of all decision-making.

With funding support from the Government of British Columbia, the Citxw Nlaka’pamux Assembly (CNA) was honoured to help facilitate this leadership gathering and looks forward to supporting additional gatherings in the coming weeks.
